Tips For Teaching Creative Writing Classes

You dont have to be a writer, or want to be a writer in the future to get some great advantages from taking creative writing classes. This type of writing expands the mind and the imagination and those skills can carry over into almost all other parts of life and other types of careers. Teaching creative writing in high schools and colleges can be a very rewarding career, and can be one of the most fun to have. Going to work each day can be full of the unexpected when you teach this type of writing.

Teaching creative writing classes is all about using your own imagination. There are some things that all teachers do, and those basics are always important. Students have to be well versed in grammar and the basics of nouns, verbs, and other important parts of sentences. The overall structure of story must be covered in the basics as well. Some even teach the journalism basics of who, what, when, where, and why which should be included at the beginning of the course when teaching creative writing.

What you can do in teaching creative writing classes can start out simple. You can have your class come up with the basics of a story without writing it yet. They should learn about coming up with a character name and the basics of what that character is all about. Those can sometimes be the hardest parts of a good piece of creative writing. In teaching creative writing, if you can get students to become very adept in coming up with imaginative and deep characters first, they may find that the rest of the process is almost done. The character often tells the story before an idea is even in place.

Once character development has been covered when teaching creative writing, the secondary characters and the main plot points can then be covered. There is a formula for a good story using plot points, and those should be discussed. The concepts of the protagonist and antagonist should also be covered early on in teaching creative writing courses. These points work well whether students are going to be writing very short stories, or perhaps some that are longer and more involved.

Dont forget to include poetry when you are teaching creative writing classes. Though there are always going to be some students that are going to groan when this is brought up, but as with any other types of creative writing, these are going to be helpful in other parts of life. Rhythm often helps with other learning and memorization, and poems are all about rhythm. They may not understand why you are including things like haiku when you are teaching creative writing, but assure them that they are building skills that help them in other parts of life.
