Dealing With Student Behavior Problems

Each person has their own way of dealing with problems at home when their children are out of line. However, it is not always easy to use those same things when you have a classroom full of children with which you must contend. At times, you may instinctively know how you can deal with student behavior problems, and at other times, you may be at a loss. You always have the option of involving the principal or the vice principal, but you should do what you can on your own first. Not only is that satisfying, it builds respect from your students as well.

What you do with student behavior problems depends on the offence and the age of the students. Kindergarteners are often more innocent in what they do, but they still have to learn what is acceptable in the classroom and what is not. The days of sitting children in the corner with a dunce hat are hopefully gone. That type of public embarrassment is not a good idea. It hurts the child and makes them more defiant. They wont learn much if you stand them in the corner. Find other ways to deal with student behavior problems.

Some teachers believe that focusing on the positive is one way to deal with problematic students in their classrooms. This can work very well with the right children. If a child is looking for attention by constantly asking to use the restroom, for example, you have to put a stop to that behavior. One teacher may give out tokens so that student knows they only have so many times in which they can go to the restroom. This was an approach to student behavior problems that my daughters teacher used with her, and it worked like a charm.

Once they are doing well with it, the praise can help them realize that positive is better than negative. Assure them that you know they can lessen the number of trips they make to the bathroom and that you are going to be very proud of them. This approach to student behavior problems should be the very first attempt to settle things down. This can work in other ways in other situations. Use the imagination to come up with ideas that fit the particular student behavior problems that you are facing.

For older children, dealing with these student behavior problems can be trickier because the reasons for the problems can be more complicated. Children that have a bad home life can act out in school, and that is something that teachers often do not know. Probably the most important part of dealing with student behavior problems in older children is to talk with them as much as you can do see if you can find the underlying reason why they are acting up. That can help you come up with the right reactions when they have problems.
